State of AI in the Enterprise: The untapped edge
Abstract
This report analyzes how enterprises worldwide are progressing from AI experimentation to scaled impact, drawing on a 2025 survey of 3,235 senior leaders across 24 countries and six industries, plus 15 executive interviews. It finds that while worker access to AI tools and investment levels are rising, most organizations remain stuck in pilot mode or focused on efficiency gains, with only a minority using AI to transform business models, products, and ways of working. Key themes include the expansion of sovereign AI and its implications for data residency and infrastructure choices, the rapid emergence of agentic AI and the governance gap around autonomous agents, and the growing footprint of physical AI in controlled operational environments. The report also reveals that most companies have not yet redesigned jobs or talent strategies around AI, and that perceived readiness is stronger in strategy and governance than in technical infrastructure, data, and skills. It concludes by proposing six leadership priorities—activation, human‑centric work redesign, proactive governance, sovereign‑aware architecture, living data/technology infrastructure, and strategic reinvention—to help organizations convert AI’s technological potential into sustainable enterprise value.
